What is corneal crosslinking?

Corneal Crosslinking (CXL) is a treatment designed mainly to increase the biomechanical strength of the cornea and reduce the risk of keratoconus progression.

Its main goal is not to immediately eliminate your prescription or to guarantee improved visual acuity. Its most important function is to stabilize the structure of the cornea when there is evidence that the keratoconus is still advancing.

This is especially important in young patients, in whom the disease can progress more rapidly.

Prior evaluation

What is assessed before the procedure?

The specialist reviews several corneal studies in order to determine:

Whether the keratoconus is progressing.
Corneal thickness.
The shape and curvature of the cornea.
The degree of irregularity.
Whether the patient meets the conditions required for the procedure.
