Retina and Vitreous

What are the retina and vitreous?

The retina is a thin layer of tissue located at the back of the eye. It is responsible for receiving light and converting it into signals that the brain then interprets.

The vitreous, in turn, is a transparent substance that fills much of the inside of the eye and is in direct contact with the retina.

Diseases affecting these structures can cause significant changes in vision and, in some cases, progress rapidly. An early evaluation can be decisive in preserving visual function.

Clínica 20/20 offers specialized Retina and Vitreous care, an area in which accurate diagnosis and follow-up are essential.

Retina and Vitreous

Which conditions can affect the retina?

The diseases and disorders that require evaluation by a Retina and Vitreous specialist include:

  • Diabetic retinopathy.
  • Retinal detachment.
  • Retinal tears or peripheral retinal changes.
  • Macular degeneration.
  • Diseases of the macula.
  • Macular edema.
  • Bleeding inside the eye.
  • Disorders related to the vitreous.
  • Retinal complications associated with various systemic diseases.

Depending on the diagnosis, management may require specialized follow-up, imaging studies, laser treatments, intraocular medication or surgical procedures.

There are symptoms you should not ignore

Seek care as a priority if you notice:

  • The sudden appearance of many “floaters” or spots in your vision.
  • Flashes of light.
  • A shadow or “curtain” over part of your field of vision.
  • Sudden loss of vision.
  • Distortion of lines or images.
  • A decrease in central vision.
  • Visual changes if you live with diabetes.

Some retinal diseases can progress painlessly, so waiting until there is significant discomfort can delay the diagnosis.

Subspecialized care

Clínica 20/20 has Dr. Teodoro Evans, a physician subspecialized in Retina and Vitreous, with specialized training in this area.

The evaluation can be complemented with diagnostic studies that make it possible to analyze the different structures of the retina and define the treatment according to each condition.

When it comes to the retina, detecting a change in time can make a big difference.
